There are mainly two types of memory:
1 : Primary Memory
:: RAM (Random Access Memory)
:-: Dynamic RAM
:-: Synchronous RAM
:-: Static RAM
:: ROM (Read Only Memory)
:-: P. ROM (Programmable Read Only Memory)
:-: EP ROM (Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory)
:-: EEP ROM (Electrically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory)
:: Cache memory
2 : Secondary Memory
:: All External Memory
Primary Memory:
Primary memory stores the data that you are using at the same time. Whatever program you run, play video, open a file, open a photo, play a game, open a PDF, etc. Whatever you are working on in an instant, its data plays in the primary memory.
- The RAM of your computer is deleted when the computer is turned off or the computer is suddenly turned off when the light goes out.
RAM is a volatile memory.
- The data that we open in an instant is processed by the CPU through RAM itself.
- As soon as we close a program or data, in the same way the data is cleared from RAM and when we open a new program or access data, then that data is stored in RAM until We use that data.
There are three types of RAM :-
:: Dynamic RAM :-
:-: Dynamic RAM refreshes thousands of times in a second.
:-: In Dynamic RAM, the information ie data is refreshed again and again, so it works slowly.
:-: This is the cheapest RAM.
:-: It is also called D RAM.
:: Synchronous RAM :-
:-: Synchronous RAM works faster than Dynamic RAM.
:-: It refreshes according to the speed of the CPU.
:-: Transfers data at a faster rate than Dynamic RAM.
:: Static RAM :-
:-: The speed of Static RAM is faster.
:-: Static RAM does not refresh frequently.
:-: Data remains in it till the electric current is there.
:-: Static RAM has more efficiency.
:-: Static RAM is expensive.
:-: It is also called S RAM.
- ROM is a permanent memory.
- Information stored in ROM can only be viewed.
- Some permanent information is written in ROM only at the time of computer manufacturing, which cannot be changed.
- On turning on the computer, the information stored in the ROM first runs, which is called BIOS (Basic Input Output System).
- There are three types of Rome.
:: PROM :- Data written in PROM cannot be erased or changed. It is completely permanent memory.
:: EPROM :- The information written in it cannot be edited but can be deleted by ultraviolet rays and new information can be stored in its place.
:: EEPROM :- The data written in it cannot be edited but new data can be collected by deleting it by electric method.
- Cache memory is a high-speed, low-storage memory that is placed between the RAM and the CPU, thereby increasing the CPU's processing capacity.
- It acts as a buffer between CPU and RAM.
It is more expensive than main memory and disk memory. But it is cheaper than 'CPU registro'.
- This is also a temporary memory.
- It is also called CPU memory.
secondary memory -
- This is a permanent memory.
Data can be stored in this.
It is cheaper than primary memory.
The information stored in it is not deleted when the light goes off or the computer is turned off.
Its storage capacity is more than the primary memory.
- This is the part of the computer that is connected to the outside.
It is also called auxiliary memory.
Major examples of secondary memory :-
:: Hard Disk - This is the permanent memory.
It is permanently installed in the computer.
- It is also used by CPU to load data and store data.
More than one hard disk can be used in a computer.
Apart from this, external hard disk can also be used.
Hard disk is also of two types:- Internal and External.
We get the internal hard disk only with the computer.
Hard disk has read and write capability.
In this you can delete old data and store new data.
Hard disk speed is measured in rpm. E.g. 7200 rpm will be faster than 5400 rpm.
We can connect the external hard disk to the computer with the help of USB cable whenever we want and can also keep it separately from the computer if not needed.
:: Floppy Disk - It is of two types, first micro floppy disk and second mini floppy disk.
Floppy disk is also called diskette.
- Its RPM capacity was 360.
Its storage capacity was about 4.5 MB.
- Currently it is not used.
:: Optical Disc - In optical disc, data is read and written with the help of laser beam.
In this data is stored in the form of pits, pits are also called bumps.
Pitts are actually small pits made on the surface of CD which we cannot see with the eyes.
- In this optical disc, optical tape, optical card are attached.
There are also two types of optical discs, first CD (compact disc) and second DVD (digital versatile disc).
- Data stored in CD can only be read, hence it is called CD ROM.
In 1985, the Grolier's Academic American Encyclopedia published CD Rom for the first time.
:: DVD - Its storage capacity is more than CD.
The storage capacity of CD is 700 MB while the storage capacity of DVD is 4 GB.
:: BRD - This is called Blu Ray Disc.
Its storage capacity is much more than DVD.
:: Pendrive - It is also called flash memory.
:-: is one of the most used memory at present.
:-: It connects to the computer through the USB port.
:-: It is so small that you can keep it in pocket too.
:-: It can also be connected to mobile.
:-: It is one of the most suitable memory to store the data.
:-: There are many types of its storage capacity like - 2GB, 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, 32GB, 64GB etc.
Apart from this, there is also some external memory like SD card and magnetic tape. But the main memory has been explained in detail above.
